Employee Onboarding/Offboarding Weekly Tip #1 – The essential tasks

Introduction

We often get asked about what the key tasks for Employee Onboarding are that we should be doing. It does depend on which country you are based in but in the UK, here is a list of key onboarding tasks split up into the different areas of the business.

Tasks for Human Resources

  • Send out a new starter welcome pack that includes the forms and documents new hires must complete.
  • Ensure you have the right to work documentation.
  • Share the good news via your Intranet or automatic let everyone know by using iThink Connect New Starter product.
  • Document the new starter’s role and compensation information in your HRIS system or records.
  • Add the new employee to the payroll.
  • Share essential company policies, including:
    • Hours of operation
    • Dress code
    • Directions and parking information
    • Reminders of what to bring on the first day (e.g., bank account details, etc.)
  • Schedule intro meetings to go over paperwork, including benefits, bank account details, and company policies.
  • If your organisation conducts periodic reviews (such as after a 90-day probationary period), schedule these and other important milestones.
  • Ask new hires to complete a background check (if applicable).

Tasks for Managers

  • Set up a welcome lunch with the new hire’s team, if appropriate.

  • Take your new starter on a tour of the office.

IT Onboarding Checklist

  • Create an email address for the new hire.
  • Set up account permissions for any platforms or software the role requires.
  • Prepare a computer and any phone equipment or tech accessories a new hire may need.
